Please Do Not Cut Milkweed (Asclepias eriocarpa)

In the effort to meet the brush clearing requirements of the recent Forest Service letter, may I request that we don't remove any living Milkweed plants in the process. The Mount Wilson version of Milkweed is a semi succulent plant that in its life form, is completely non flammable so poses no fire threat whatsoever. Milkweed is the only food-source for the caterpillar of the Monarch butterfly, and I would like to see Mount Wilson remain as one of the few remaining food sources for the Monarch in the Los Angeles area. Both the Monarch and Milkweed are becoming increasingly rare due to threats from climate, industrial expansion, and Round-Up ready crop enforcement by the big M. I worry that the beautiful Monarch will go the way of the California Condor soon if we, as humans, don't work hard to help protect its very specialized life cycle.

In case you don't recognize Mount Wilson milkweed (Asclepias eriocarpa) here attached is an image of it.

Thanks, Mt. Wilson Superintendent
